PostgreSQL database development with Prisma

PostgreSQL is a reliable, open-source relational database. It enforces relationships and rules between records, supports transactions and handles reporting queries well, which is why I use it for ERPs, SaaS platforms, ledgers and most business applications, usually with Prisma for type-safe access and migrations.

When PostgreSQL is a good fit

  • Orders, payments, inventory, instalments and other records that must stay consistent
  • Multi-tenant SaaS platforms that need clear data separation
  • Reporting and dashboards built on aggregations across many records
  • Applications that also need JSON fields, full-text search or geographic data

When I'd suggest something else

  • Data with no fixed structure that changes shape constantly, where a document database may be simpler
  • Simple real-time prototypes, where Firebase can be quicker to start

How I work with PostgreSQL

Constraints and relations

Foreign keys, unique constraints and checks so invalid data is rejected by the database itself.

Migrations

Version-controlled schema changes with Prisma, reviewed and tested before production.

Indexes and query tuning

Measured with real query plans, focused on the screens and reports people use most.

Backups

Managed backups with a tested restore process and least-privilege access.

Frequently asked questions

Why PostgreSQL instead of MySQL?

Both are solid. PostgreSQL offers richer data types, strong standards compliance and advanced features such as JSON querying, which suit growing business applications. If your organisation already runs MySQL, that can be the better choice.

Which hosting do you recommend?

Managed PostgreSQL from providers such as Neon, Supabase, Railway or major cloud platforms, chosen for your region, budget and backup requirements.
